Acupressure is the ancient oriental art of using finger pressure to release blockages in the flow of life-force energy along the meridians or pathways in the body.

Originating in China and predating acupuncture by thousands of years, acupressure is one of the most ancient forms of healing on earth. The attainment of harmony and balance within the body is the mainstay of Asian medicine and healing. In order for a body to be harmoniously balanced, and thus for the innate self-healing capacity to be maximized, the energy within the body must be able to flow and the flow must be balanced.

"According to traditional Chinese medicine, 12 'rivers,' or meridians, run through the body carrying energy, or chi, that nourishes the organs and body tissue. By stimulating particular points around the body through acupressure [using fingers and hands] or acupuncture [using needles], the [practitioner] frees up or encourages the flow of energy along specific meridians."  - Jan Goodwin, "A New Way of Thinking about Your Energy," New Woman (November 1997)
"Our health or harmony depends upon the free and even distribution of the life energy throughout our body, mind and spirit. When the stress and strain of daily living disrupt the movement of life energy, our mind, body, and spirit are all affected. Not only do we succumb to worry, fear, anger, sadness, and pretensions, but we increase our tendency to become ill or 'out of balance'. Quite simply, [body energy work] is a way to balance life energy. It shows us how to use simple hands-on sequences to restore emotional equilibrium, relieve pain, and release the causes of both acute and chronic conditions."  - Alice Burmeister, The Touch of Healing: Energizing Body, Mind, and Spirit with the Art of jin Shin Jyutsu. 1997
